HISTORY

The Clyde is a family pub that’s been an integral part of the Carlton community since the mid-19th century. The Clyde first appears in the records in 1866, when Queen Victoria was in her 40s and the typewriter hadn't been invented yet. The world has changed a lot since then, but the Clyde is still here on the corner of Elgin and Cardigan.

From its earliest days the Clyde has been a cornerstone of Carlton life. In the 1870s, the Clyde was the club house and change rooms for the nascent Carlton Football Club. Then in the 1880s, the legendary Billy Midwinter, only person ever to play test cricket for both Australia and England, took over as landlord. The feisty Zilla came later when women were legally able to run pubs but not much else. In the 1960s Zilla sold to the famous Val & George Harrison, who in 1988 passed it onto Mag and Frank who are still going strong over 30 years later.

Over the journey the Clyde has welcomed generations of Carltonians, uni students and staff, sportsmen and women, thespians, comedians, politicians, princes and paupers. While we’ve had the odd face-lift along the way, we still provide all-comers with the same old-fashioned, family warmth and hospitality. These days you can pull up in the front bar, take a seat by the fire in the lounge bar, or bask in the sunshine in our large beer garden or rooftop bar.

So come join us at the Clyde and add your own story to the history of a Carlton institution.

Our History is long, and our connection to the community runs deep.
